Tutorials!

I've been very busy dyeing this month's Patreon yarns, yarns for the exclusive Patreon shop, and yarns for my trunk show at Unwound in September, and, unfortunately, the weekend got away from me and I didn't get to podcast. I did however finish the tutorials I've been promising.

Leaving a Void

I'm a busy person. I don't mean necessarily that I have a lot to do, but rather that I do a lot. I fill voids.

I work full time. This takes me away from my true calling - yarn - about 50 hours a week. My household is simple, just my husband and I, two dogs and four chickens. Not a large home, not a lot of laundry, little need for complex gourmet meals... simple, and yet, I stuff my life full. You rarely catch me simply sitting quietly, breathing. Nope. If I have time to sit, I have time to work on a pattern, knit, film, practice yoga, dye yarn, write, cook, read, check email/form responses/forum posts/weather... whatever. And sometimes, two or more of these activities as once. This past weekend I edited my podcast while dyeing yarn and knitting a shawl, simultaneously.

While I find comfort in "busy" because I'm "achieving" or "completing" or "fulfilling," it's not healthy. I recognize this. The billboards are all there. Headaches, body aches, sleeplessness, forgetfulness, belief I finished things I only thought about doing...etc.

But filling voids does just apply to my daily and work routines. It applies to my art as well. I struggle to leave negative space or simplicity whether in my knitting patterns or yarns. If there's a field of stockinette, surely there is room for a cable, stripe or bit of lace.  And yarn? Well, if white is showing, I must not be done.

Are you nodding? Does this sound like you? You aren't alone.

I know voids are healthy and necessary. Yup. I have even put mechanisms in place to build in voids. I started to practice yoga again, but often there's an excuse not to do it. And I'm plotting yarns with more "voids" but I'm struggling and feel like embracing voids should be easier than this. It should be natural. Like breathing. A habit even.

So I'm going to make a "mini-habit" of it. My BREATHING habit.

Making a new habit, even a mini one, isn't easy either. It take commitment and practice. Implementation is incidental if not for repetition. I need a trigger; something that forces me to stop and take time for myself. But what?

I recently stumbled on "Modern Mindfulness - How to Be More Relaxed, Focused, and Kind While Living in a Fast, Digital, Always-On World" by Rohan Gunatillake. To be honest, I haven't read it all. I haven't given it the time it deserves, but the premise hits home and one of the meditations the book suggests to help make you be present and in the moment is Stop Signs.

Brilliant! I commute. I run into MANY stop signs each day. This I can do. I'm going to actively take that marathon red light at the corner and turn that into "me time." I'm going to turn inside, breathe, and simply observe while under that mandatory 70 second stop (yes, really I counted, feels like an hour!) I'm going to pay attention to the feeling of my breathe, the weather, the color of the vehicles around me, while releasing judgement and negative thoughts.

And then, I'm going to go home and dye every inch of that yarn in every color I can think of, because self improvement is a continual work in progress ;)

A History in Needles

Have you ever questioned your possession of certain needles?

Tonight, I've been busy working on a new design. Yes, I know... What about the six other unfinished projects you promised to work on Jesse? Hush! Strike while the iron is hot or the muse runs away. Beside all that, my mum wanted a pattern designed for her with certain specifications, and I aim to please. (HI Mom!)

For this particular project, I'm reworking an already familiar shape and structure with a significant shift in gauge, moving from a fingering to a worsted weight. This took swatching. Gauge swatches are important, and if you question this, check out the epic hat from my last podcast.

I started out on a US 8, but found myself disappointed in how poorly the texture was showing in the fabric I created. My natural response to poor stitch definition is to move to a smaller needle. I don't really understand this tendency. My thinking was that smaller = tighter = finer = more emphasis on texture. I guess I thought I could torture the look I wanted out of this yarn by pressuring it into submission on small needles. Sadly, a smaller needle was also going to cause a denser, less draping fabric, which was not going to work for this design, so I opted to go up a needle size before scraping the whole design.

An interesting thing happened. When I went up to a US 9, the stitch definition improved. The drape still wasn't quite what I wanted, but the result was encouraging. I soldiered on and moved even further up the chain to a US 10. We have a winner! The textured stitch was even more defined and the fabric had drape. This little experiment, of course, had me studying the stitch structure to understand why the definition improved. The answer is simple: with the larger stitches, there is more yarn with more room to move, and thusly, the purls can pop further in relief from the stockinette background.  But, I digress. This wasn't the most interesting feature of this exercise for me.

What interested me most about this little swatch exercise was my collection of needles. I was working with circular needles. I'm proud to admit to a significant and broad collection of tools. I love my needles; they make knitting a joy. However... When exactly, and for what project, did I obtain a 60 inch US 10 needle?!? I cannot think of ANY project in my past that required such a needle. I even took a minute to troop through my Ravelry project pages to try and identify what triggered that acquisition, and although I was unable to exact a history, tonight I'm thrilled to have it among my tools as it's the right tool for this job.

Clearly, it's past my bedtime when my curiosity is peaked by the history of an acquisition over the science behind an accomplishment.

Knit Pals Community Mixer

At long last, it is finally here and I don't think I could be more excited!

This fall, I'm hosting a virtual community mixer event. The premise is simple. I'm going to dye up two skeins each in a variety of colorways. You register online HERE so that I have a head count and know how many sets to dye. Then, after registration, I open up an exclusive mini shop to the registrants, and you each get to purchase one skein of yarn at 30% off. When I ship your yarn out to you, I'll be sending you the contact information of whomever purchased the skein that matches yours. Likewise, they will receive your contact information. From there - may a new friendship bloom! You'll each have the opportunity to reach out to your "Knit Pal" to email, chat, share and interact as you see fit, with a common colorway as a jumping off point.

Want more information? Details are HERE and questions are always welcome.
Register HERE until August 24th!
Yarns will be available to purchase no later than September 9th.

Come, enjoy some yarn and make a friend! We'd love to have you! OPEN WORLDWIDE!

2018 Holiday Ornament Exchange

If you've been watching my podcast, you've already heard about this community mixer idea I've been teasing you with for the holidays. Well, it's more than an idea now. We are doing this!

For the inaugural year, I'm going to limit this to the U.S. I'm sure this is a disappointment to some, but please, let me get the kinks worked out so that we can get global for future years.

The concept is simple - Give 6, Get 6 Assorted Ornaments in return from 6 different crafters, and share some holiday joy.

For all the details and registration, visit the Ornament Exchange page and be sure to join us over in the Knit Up & Dye Group on Ravelry in the Holiday Ornament Exchange thread.

Colorway Chronicles: September Drive

I like to play with applying multiple dyes to yarns in order to get unique results. In this case, I was specifically looking to create a very autumnal look that paid homage to the canopies of colors I'd driven under back east each fall. (If you haven't experienced the changing of leaves, put it on your bucket list - it's one of natures most impressive shows of color."

For this colorway, I made use of my scribble technique. Aiming to get dashes of color with random placement I used three of my favorite leafy fall colors: a deep red, a warm gold and a burnt orange. Then, as a final step once all of the yarn had been scribble dyed and set, I went back with a dusky green, just to apply a few "leaves" that hadn't changed yet and really reign in the "flame" look to a more seasonal display of color. Sadly, I don't have a photo of this yarn caked up to show you the final effect, just the "as dyed in skein" photo which shows the colors much more grouped than the final project would reflect. But is is gorgeous and exactly what I was aiming for.

Colorway Chronicles: Macaw

Sometimes a colorway is born completely out of experimentation. "Macaw" is one such colorway.

I wanted to play with some dyes in the primary colorways and a technique that didn't allow much bleed/blend to see if I could control how much they would overlap and blend into secondary and tertiary colors. With this dye combination, I knew the "worst" outcome would be a rainbow skein... the best outcome would be isolated colors with little overlap and more of a tonal transition. And that is exactly what happened.

Much like the feathers of a Macaw, the colors are individual and do not mix to become other colors, but rather glaze over each other for a much more tonal effect, and you get this rich, tropical tribute to a very colorful friend.

Knit Up and Dye Episode 72 - Sometimes, it takes a stranger

This episode is dedicated to W.J.
All my love. Keep going. We will do this together.

This episode includes some seriously emotional (on my part) discussion about worthiness, vulnerability and shame as well as how knitting and the knitting community are involved in the healing process. There is also a full demonstration of how to block the farmhouse shawl - or any unique shaped shawl, for that matter.

Colorway Chronicles: Partying with Pagans & Swirl Girl

Last fall I was working up colorways specifically with an autumn slant for Unwound Artisan Yarns in La Crosse, WI, who very kindly retails my yarns (Thank you! I love you guys!!!) and I thought a Halloween inspired colorway would be a lot of fun. Hence was born "Partying with Pagans" which features purples, greens and oranges on a white base. Colors ripped right out of "Hocus Pocus" (1993, features Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker amongst others - an amusing watch.)

Little did I know what magic I'd conjured.

Not long after this came out of the cauldron and flew north to its new home, I had the pleasure of visiting the shop myself and got to meet Terri. Terri is a wonder of talent and drive, with a personality as addictive as her generosity is bountiful. Terri spoke of her love of "Partying with Pagans" and showed me a picture of a guitar she had owned that had the wildest paint job - very similar to the yarn - with all these colors swirled together... but no white. Well! If that wasn't inspiration enough to create "Partying with Pagans'" dark cousin "Swirl Girl" (named for Terri, of course) than I don't now what is!

"Swirl Girl" features all the same spellwork as "Partying with Pagans" with the minor exception that dark magic is at play... a little rock and roll, if you will, and instead of white, there is black. It can be obtained Exclusively through Unwound. Don't live in the area? Contact them. They won't mind filling your custom order by phone, I promise.

And, don't forget to tell Terri how much you love the yarn she inspired. ;)

Privacy Alert Reminder

Okay folks, this is a repost of a blogpost from May 2017, but it is an important one and one that we should all be aware of and pay attention to. We all know that privacy is an illusion in the technical age, but are you aware that there is a free website out there that allows you to look up anyone and get current and past addresses, phone numbers, as well as a list of all relatives and associates? NOT COOL.

The website is TruePeopleSearch.com - go, check it out, but be prepared to feel violated.

Then, do this: REMOVE ME! You don't have to be exposed. You don't have to be at risk. This is a violation of your privacy, and a great tool for anyone looking to steal identities.

Believe it - I'm no longer on it. Neither is most of my family. Searches indicate that minors are not listed.

PSA complete. Soap box vacated. Thank you for your time and attention.

Colorway Chronicles: My Summer Romance

I have a great love for water. Whether lake, ocean, river, shower, or bath, if I have the opportunity to be in or around water, I will take it. Especially during the summer months. Ironically, I live in the desert. To that end, water is ever more precious to me and my appreciation, ever stronger.  I have many romantic fantasies of escaping to a quiet beach house in view of rolling waves and lovely blue-grey time rounded stone covered beaches. This colorway is the embodiment of that fantasy.

Colorway Chronicles: Monster Under My Bed

When you're little, monsters can be horribly scary. But, once you apply an understanding and welcoming of the more Henson-style monsters into your life, those friendly, happy, helpful creatures become lifelong friends.

This colorway is for the wonderful monsters that make us giggle and laugh, help us stay up late at night (when we're supposed to be sleeping), and are our friends in the quiet, imaginative, creative times. This particular monster is prone to hiding under my bed, making my room messier when I'm supposed to be cleaning it, and sticks out his tongue when I'm trying to keep a straight face. Where do your monster friends live and how do they make you laugh?

Colorway Chronicles: Wrench Turner

Beauty can be found in unlikely places. "Wrench Turner" is an homage to one such place: the garage.

My husband is mechanically inclined and his love of motorcycles keeps him well entertained in our garage. I often will take my knitting (during the warmer months) and sit in the driveway while he changes tires, adjusts chains, performs oil changes and even rebuilds engines. It provides us companionable time, gives him a convenient third hand as necessary, and me the opportunity to watch my husband do what he loves in his favorite environment, which to me is a thing of beauty. I love to watch him, how he manipulates these parts and machines, selects the right greases and lubricants, and keeps his equipment in running order. It is a dirty ballet with a knowledge and a grace that fascinates me. And when his hands are dirty, I know he's happy.

"Wrench Turner" is my attempt to capture the smears and drops of grease and oil that so decorates a happy mechanic. This is an "organic" warm grey-brown tonal colorway. (Organic referencing the colors... green/brown undertones.)

Colorway Chronicles: North Copper River

Sock blanks are great fun to dye. They afford interesting opportunities that skein dyeing does not. Because you are working with a fabric, rather than a bundle of strands, there are many more ways to apply the dyes with different results.

For "North Copper River" I combined techniques, utilizing wall pours, voids, resists and even a little speckling to get a glorious tonal quality of multiple colors that looks very much like a satellite photo of a river cutting through a barren land with multiple altitudes and depths. I find this colorway infinitely interesting to look at and great fun to create.

Shipping Overages

I've long since known there are some less than functional features of Etsy that could affect customer confidence, but what I didn't realize was that I hadn't communicated how I handle them.

Etsy calculates shipping fees per each item, not over the order total. This affects the overall rate you are charged for shipping, often making it much higher than the actual cost.

To resolve this issue I offer two solutions.

You are welcome to contact me with a list of the items you wish to purchase and I will set up a custom order with a single weight by which Etsy will calculate your shipping. I'm always willing to build custom orders whether for off the shelf items or dyed to order special purchases and welcome the opportunity to interact with you.

Or, if you place your order through the regular shopping cart, I will refund you the difference of the shipping rate you were charged and what I actually paid through the system when I generated your shipping label.

Hopefully, this clarifies how I handle this issue. I don't want a miscalculating shopping cart to be the reason you held back from buying that perfect extra skein. I've also updated the information in my shop to make this more obvious.

If you are a shop owner as well and have other solutions to this dilemma, I welcome your suggestions.

And as always, I'm open to all comments and feedback. Please let me know what you need and want.

Thank you.

Colorway Chronicles: Brick

Another color I find challenging to work with is red. I love the color red. It has such a rich and varied spectrum, however I find blue-reds are more common, easier to achieve and more prevalent than yellow-reds.  What do I mean by this and why does it matter?

Red is a composite dye, which means it is made up of other colors. Magenta is the primary base, however varying amounts of blue, yellow and black are added to this to get red. Yellow is a weaker pigment, and it takes a lot of yellow to make an impact. Too much yellow in the mix and, of course, you get orange. Because of this, and of course, economic factors, most reds tend to land more in the blue-based tones than the yellow. Which is all well and fine, they are very pretty, however, if you are an individual with yellow undertones in your skin (such as myself) the blue under toned reds are simply not as flattering when worn around your face.  This is a fashion challenge many people face - we love red, but most reds don't love us.

Brick is my answer. I worked with a yellow based red that had slightly orange tendencies and warmed the tone while adding depth to the overall color by adding a yellow-green. (Weird right?) What I got in the end is a rich tonal yellow-red that varies from a rust, through red and on to a maroon. It immediately made me think of factory fresh red bricks. I love this colorway, and am seriously considering a fingering weight sweater in this colorway.

Colorway Chronicles: Finch

Whilst "grellow" is all the rage, it is a real challenge for me. I've tried to get this out of my dye pots on several occasions with mixed results.

My first attempt at a grellow, which is grey and yellow smooshed together into a color name all its own, came out a decidedly ill green. Why? Well, the answer is simple really. Grey isn't grey.

Many dyes are composites - colors made up of other colors. Blacks are famous for this and if you look closely you can rather easily tell if you are looking at a red-black or a blue-black. Manufacturers do offer "true black" and most recently "true silver" but they aren't always easy to find or get. My particular silver/grey dye is a blue-grey. And, if I'm not careful in how I apply it to the yarn in conjunction with yellow, it mixes and I get a green. A sickly, unattractive green. A color so bad, I turned away from reattempting this for over a year.

More recent attempts didn't give me the blend I was looking for. I didn't want to have to leave white between the grey and yellow. I wanted them to wash into each other without turning green. I used a variety of methods and did a significant amount of over dyeing in navy.

But now, there is Finch. I finally found the right process and tones to get a grellow I was comfortable with that didn't have any of that ghastly green undertone.

If you work at anything long enough, you'll have success.

Colorway Chronicles: Under the Sea

Sometimes improvising a design based on how you're feeling is fun and has wonderful results.

I was preparing to film an episode of my podcast and had a couple specific techniques in mind that I wanted to demonstrate as a double process, but was feeling rather uninspired. Weather had been cold and nasty, not just here, but pretty well across the entire country, and I knew that a winter inspired or themed sock blank was not what people wanted to see. Still, I wanted to use blue because it shows up really well on camera. I thumbed through my collection of stencils, and discovered I have a lot of summer themed stencils and absolutely no winter ones. I found myself fretting a little thinking summer felt inappropriate, but then I realized, a tropical vacation was exactly what I was craving, and likely, so was everyone else. You can find the full demonstration of the creation of this blank in Episode 52: So Much Gratitude.

Colorway Chronicles: She's Waiting For You

This is one of those sock blanks that I'm tempted just to edge and use as a completed piece. I think it would make a lovely wrap just as it is.

"She's Waiting For You" is another double process sock blank, in which I dyed the blank, then airbrushed stenciled designs over the pre-dyed piece. This particular colorway was actually inspired by a favorite movie of mine Steel Magnolias (the original, I haven't seen the remake). I so love the scene in Truvy's where M'Lynn is countering Shelby's description of her wedding colors (Blush & Bashful) with her own colorful description "That sanctuary looks like it's been hosed down with Pepto Bismol!" I'm of the belief my sock blank is more appealing then digestive stomach aid in its blushing and bashful tones.
